positioned on the shore of one of new zealand’s many idyllic beaches, ‘hut on sleds’ by crosson clarke carnachan architects provides for a family of five, despite measuring only 40 square meters. the brief from the clients called for a simple, small and functional design that embodied the true essence of a hut.
perched on the shore’s dunes, the timber clad structure exists in harmony with its surroundings, blending into the landscape. resting on two thick wooden sleds that allow the structure to be readily relocated, the design responds to the ever-changing nature of the it’s environment, guarding against coastal erosion.

internally, each aspect of the scheme has been considered in order to maximize available space. a large shutter on the northeastern façade opens to form an awning, revealing two-storey high steel-framed glass doors that form the main entrance. the hut then transforms again, opening up to the views of the surf and the distant mercury islands. sharing the same view as the downstairs, a mezzanine bedroom is accessed by climbing a wall-mounted ladder through a closable hatch. above, a roof terrace catches rainwater for the gravity tanks below.
simultaneously embracing and challenging the traditional image of a new zealand beach house, ‘hut on sleds’ simply and elegantly redefines temporary holiday accommodation.
