  • O-office turns an abandoned factory into iD town: the creative art district

    · 제목 : ‘iD town’ o-office architects, guangdong province, china  - all images courtesy of o-office   · 내용 : 가변건축과 가동건축의 경계가 참 난해합니다. Photo     guangzhou-based o-office architects has recently opened the first exhibition in their ongoing renovation of an abandoned concrete factory titled ‘iD town’. the project occupies the former 20-acre honghua printing and dyeing factory built in 1989 and left deserted for over 10 years, now home to a series of infill structures comprising an art district complete with studios, restaurants, hotels, administrative spaces and exhibition spaces amongst others. the entire master plan will see the realization of 18 buildings over a period of 20 years, however some of the locales are already completed and functioning. using the existing concrete skeleton of the derelict construct, the architects injected black and white structures organized loosely around a straight line that respond to an improved sense of human scale, structurally independent to the factory’s 550-foot aged shell. the windows of the factory have been removed to create a free flow of circulation and opens the internal structures to courtyards on the exterior which will accommodate a wide range of events and larger audiences. as new clients approach, the project will grow in scope and character, however the change is expected to occur over a longer period of time.

  • khachaturian architects construct slatted wood summer house

khachaturian architects construct slatted wood summer house milan- and moscow-based firm khachaturian architects have constructed ‘summer house’, a slatted wood enveloped patio that is positioned nearby a plant. positioned away from the road and industrial noise, the primary objective in designing the structure was to limit visual contact with the factory, and open up views towards the surrounding natural landscape. this is achieved through the shape of the arbor, whose façades are positioned at a particular angle in order to also maintain an intimate atmosphere within.     the volume sits on a rectangular platform and is divided into three spaces. the first is an open area, facing the factory and which defines the entrance to the pavilion. at the heart of this zone one finds a tree that offers shade from the summer sun. the two other programs are shielded from the factory. one is the covered portion of the arbor, consisting of more and less open sections that create an opportunity for functional separation of the internal quarters, and the other is the open terrace looking at the forest.   the slope of the roof is designed to be a continuation of the façade, maintaining the integrity of the ‘summer house’. the western edifice is fractured diagonally to create a milder shape and transition to more of a human scale, as the maximum height mark is four meters from the terrace level.   the entire volume of the arbor is formed by its structure; there are no hidden substructures. the main building material is natural wood, resistant to russia’s climate. the external partitions are made of wooden slats, which are attached to the structure along with polycarbonate.   during the day, depending on the movement of the sun, the space is filled with different patterns of light and shadow, as the project was carried out with maximum attention to details and nodes.
